DIVING INFORMATION

The Maldives is one of the most rewarding diving destinations in the world — warm, clear water, thriving reefs, and ocean life found in only a handful of places on the planet. From gentle lagoons to current-rich channels, every atoll offers a different underwater experience.

As a Swiss–Maldivian team with years of local diving knowledge, we understand the rhythm of the seasons, the behaviour of manta rays and whale sharks, and which reefs offer the best conditions throughout the year. Whether you’re exploring colourful coral gardens, drifting along channel walls with grey reef sharks, or visiting iconic manta cleaning stations, each dive brings its own highlight.

Marine life is abundant and diverse: turtles, stingrays, eagle rays, schools of snapper and fusiliers, Napoleon wrasse, reef sharks, and occasionally even hammerheads. In the right season, cruising alongside manta rays or meeting a whale shark is not unusual — it’s one of the moments divers come back for again and again.

With sheltered inner reefs, dramatic outer atoll drop-offs, and countless channels shaped by the currents, the Maldives offers diving suitable for all levels. Whether you prefer relaxing, easy dives or exhilarating drift dives, this archipelago promises unforgettable underwater encounters.

 FAQ

  • The Maldives is great for diving year-round.

From November to April, conditions are typically calm with excellent visibility. From May to October, plankton-rich currents attract large numbers of manta rays in places like Hanifaru Bay, and overall value is better during this season.

  • Expect reef sharks, turtles, stingrays, eagle rays, mobula rays, manta rays, whale sharks, and a huge variety of colorful reef fish.

Soft corals, overhangs, and pinnacles are common, and channel dives often bring bigger pelagic species.

Encounters vary by season and atoll, but the Maldives is one of the world’s most reliable destinations for megafauna.

  • Yes — many reefs are calm, shallow, and ideal for newer divers. However, some channel dives have strong currents and require good buoyancy and comfort in the water.

Mixed-experience groups can still enjoy the Maldives by choosing the right sites, conditions, and itinerary.

  • Currents can range from gentle to strong depending on the atoll, time of year, and the specific dive site. Channel dives often have incoming or outgoing currents — creating impressive marine life action.

Briefings always cover direction and entry techniques so divers can prepare accordingly.

  • Water temperature is consistently around 27–30°C year-round. Visibility ranges from 15–40 meters, depending on season and plankton levels.

  • A dive computer and SMB are mandatory for all divers in the Maldives. A reef hook is recommended for some channel dives, and many divers prefer a 3mm wetsuit for comfort.

All equipment can be rented in the Maldives if needed.

  • Yes — the Maldives is one of the world’s best snorkelling destinations. Snorkelers can see turtles, rays, reef fish, healthy coral reefs, and even mantas or whale sharks.

Many reefs are shallow and easily accessible, making it ideal for mixed groups of divers and non-divers.

  • Use reef-safe sunscreen, maintain good buoyancy, avoid touching the reef, don’t chase wildlife, and follow all briefings carefully.

Mantas and whale sharks should be observed calmly with plenty of space and without flash photography.

Maldives Dive Trips Guide

The Maldives is one of the world’s most iconic dive destinations, offering warm water, 20–30m visibility, and marine encounters ranging from reef sharks and turtles to manta rays and whale sharks. Spread across 26 atolls, the country offers a mix of drift diving, channels, pinnacles, and calm lagoons suitable for divers of all experience levels.

Most visitors explore the Maldives either by joining a liveaboard or staying at a resort with a strong house reef. Liveaboards allow divers to visit multiple atolls in one week, while resorts provide comfort, relaxation, and easy access to well-established dive centers.

The best time to dive depends on the region. The west side of the atolls is manta-rich from May to November, while the east side offers excellent visibility and reliable shark encounters from December to April. Both seasons provide warm water and a wide range of marine life.

A Maldives trip is suitable for both divers and non-divers. Many guests enjoy snorkeling, spa treatments, beach days, yoga, and island visits alongside daily dives. With the right timing and guidance, the Maldives offers safe, memorable, and consistently rewarding underwater experiences throughout the year.
